Quo vadis, teachers?

As we celebrate World Teachers’ Day this year, we bask in the glory of accolades showered on us, we beam with pride that we are in the so-called noblest profession and we enjoy the brief respite from the four corners of our classrooms or offices.

Indeed, we deserve to be placed on a pedestal for we shape our learners to become successful in their chosen fields. What is more significant is our influence in transforming them with values that put aside discrimination, hate, corruption, degradation and callousness. Even more significant is the spiritual seed that we plant in their hearts.

After all the festivities and noise have died down, we crawl back to the daily grind, snap back our senses and face the center of our profession--- the learners. So, where do we head after World Teachers’ Day? I suggest that we go back to our inner selves and ask, “Have we really been good at teaching? How many lives have we really touched? How well do our students remember us?
