CHRISTMAS is here indeed!  The streets are adorned with Christmas lanterns and decors, radio stations are blasting off Christmas songs, stores are doing brisk biz with Christmas stuff, the malls are filled with shoppers, kids and kids-at-heart are everywhere!  Bonuses, sad to say, are pffft...gone.

Well, it's the season of fun and I want to share with you a video which kids would love.

Resurrecting and Tracing The Ilocano

After a loooong rest from this site, I am back.  It has been months of hard work: research trips, shooting, editing, dubbing, writing plus not eating on time and lacking decent sleep.  Why?  Well, I just happen to be the coach, writer and moderator of my team at school (INCAT Natan-ok) which is competing for the national video blog contest.  It's fun though and I'm getting the hang of it.  I am just too frustrated for the slim support that my superiors are giving.  Man, my pockets are empty.  I just pray our 2 blogs will win.

Check out http://resurrectingtheilocanospirit.wordpress.com and http://tracingthewaytoilocanogreatness.blogspot.com.

I am happy that the blogs can help Ilocanos here in Ilocos Norte revive or reawaken interest in things Ilocano.  I,myself, treasure the road trips, interviews, the festivals that we had.

Check out the videos of INCAT Natan-ok on you tube!

1st Ilocos Norte Film Festival

The province was abuzz with activities for the 1st Ilocos Norte Film Festival  which ran from October 25 to 27.  The fest kicked off with a motorcade around the capital, Laoag City, followed by an Opening Program at the Plaza del Norte in Paoay.  Students and teachers queued up at Robinson's Mall in San Nicolas to view Pinoy movies for free. What were most rewarding were the two seminar-workshops conducted by the Film Development Council of the Philippines on Oct. 26 at the MMSU Training Center in Batac.  Director Brillante Mendoza (famous for his films like "Kinatay" and "Lola" which won in the Cannes Film Fest) lectured on "From Concept to Film".  Actor-Director Leo Martinez tackled "Acting for Film and Television" based on "No Acting Please- The Eric Morris System of Work for Actors". The Closing Program was held at  Malacanang of the North in Paoay.

    Say "SHAM-SEE" (SHAMCEY)

I was so irked with the stupid pronunciation of Supsup's first name by TV newscasters.  Tiangco and the rest kept on saying "sham-sey" instead of "sham-see" for SHAMCEY.  Can you stand these people when they say "stan-ley" for Stanley, "hen-ley" for Henley, "man-ley" for Manley???  Yuck!  Send them to Speech School!

YOUNG PEOPLE NOWADAYS DO NOT REALIZE THAT THEY WILL BE SPENDING MORE TIME BEING DEAD THAN ALIVE.

I don't see why young people nowadays do not realize that they will be spending more time being dead than alive. Why are they so in a hurry to die? Why do they love to kill themselves slowly with booze, smoke and drugs? They will die anyway...but why rush? Just live , LIVE now! Live and enjoy being healthy. God lends everyone time to live on earth. We all live on borrowed time. Saying "march to your own drum" is utterly nonsense. March to God's drum because every beat that we follow is HIS!
I am saying this because SOME of the youth that I see and read about everyday are aimlessly heading towards destruction. Those who will attempt to negate are probably guilty.

Looking for Johnny Moon Found New Juan Lunas.

The first Ilocos Norte Creative Media Arts Festival dubbed as "Looking for Johnny Moon" was held at the Plaza del  Norte last July 14-16, 2011.  The said festival was  attended by educators, writers, budding film makers and artists from DLSU-College of St. Benilde, University of Baguio, SLU-Baguio, schools from Ilocandia like MMSU, DWCL, INCAT, INNHS, ISALA, Savior's Academy and HSAL.
Resource speakers were Soxy Topacio and Mark Meily, both stage and film directors.
I was the lone representative of INCAT on the first day when Scriptwriting was tackled by Soxy Topacio and Directing was shared by Mark Meily.  A tour of the different tourist spots in Ilocos was included  to enable the workshop participants to get inspiration for the output, a short film shot on the same day.
I joined 3 young gentlemen, one of them was my actor for INCAT Theater Arts Guild of which I've been an Adviser for years now.  We made a short movie, "Bubble Gum".  I made the script.  The 4 of us acted in the film, one was the camera man, and one was assigned as director.
The script I wrote won First Prize in Scriptwriting.
"Looking for Johnny Moon" paved the way for discovering new talents in digital photography and animation too.
Awarding of prizes was held in a most fitting place, the house of Juan Luna (Johnny Moon) in Badoc, Ilocos Norte.
The new breed of Juan Lunas will inspire others who have what it takes to be a famous Media Arts enthusiast.
I believe there's a Johnny Moon in each of us.  There's a Johnny Moon in every gathering or group. There's a Johnny Moon in every Ilocano.

    PARTS OF A NEWSPAPER

    PARTS OF A NEWSPAPER

NEWS STORIES OR CURRENT NEWS give account of events that recently happened. They aim to keep the reader up-to-date on  political, economic, cultural and other events.  It is generally the first section in any major daily newspaper. The news are split into local news and international /foreign news.

EDITORIAL is an article expressing the stand or opinion of the editor or publisher on the hottest news or a current issue.

An EDITORIAL SECTION of the newspaper is where writers are allowed to present their opinions and persuasive articles.  They can take the forms of:
Staff Editorials: These are pieces written by staff writers and published unsigned and that they should be perceived as the collective opinion of the newspaper itself.
SIGNED EDITORIALS are published by individual reporters and published with a by-line.  They are meant to be taken as the opinion of that individual writer.

FEATURE STORY is a type of a news story that is written from the angle of human interest.  Sometimes called "soft news", this section contains more light-hearted pieces to entertain, inform, or instruct readers on things they will enjoy. Such pieces include:
entertainment; human interest, music, television or play reviews; celebrity interviews, social columns about parties and events of the "hoi polloi", advice columns and comic strips.

COLUMNS express the writer's views on any issue or issues.

BUSINESS NEWS reports on the status of different businesses and industries.

SPORTS NEWS gives the results of national and international sports competitions/games and their advance reports and schedules.  This also includes news on sports celebrities.

READERS' OPINIONS includes the readers' comments & opinions sent to the newspaper publisher or editor-in-chief.  Most publishers allot at least a half page for the readers' opinions.

OTHER DETAILS:  ears, dateline, jumpline, index, deck, graphic, cut, cutline, by-line, photo credit.

    "Of Studies" by Francis Bacon

    Of Studies

    by Francis Bacon

Studies serve for delight, for ornament, and for ability. Their chief use for delight is in privateness and retiring; for ornament, is in discourse; and for ability, is in the judgment and disposition of business. For expert men can execute, and perhaps judge of particulars, one by one; but the general counsels, and the plots and marshalling of affairs, come best from those that are learned. To spend too much time in studies is sloth; to use them too much for ornament, is affectation; to make judgment wholly by their rules, is the humor of a scholar. They perfect nature, and are perfected by experience: for natural abilities are like natural plants, that need pruning, by study; and studies themselves do give forth directions too much at large, except they be bounded in by experience. Crafty men condemn studies, simple men admire them, and wise men use them; for they teach not their own use; but that is a wisdom without them, and above them, won by observation. Read not to contradict and confute; nor to believe and take for granted; nor to find talk and discourse; but to weigh and consider. Some books are to be tasted, others to be swallowed, and some few to be chewed and digested; that is, some books are to be read only in parts; others to be read, but not curiously; and some few to be read wholly, and with diligence and attention. Some books also may be read by deputy, and extracts made of them by others; but that would be only in the less important arguments, and the meaner sort of books, else distilled books are like common distilled waters, flashy things. Reading maketh a full man; conference a ready man; and writing an exact man. And therefore, if a man write little, he had need have a great memory; if he confer little, he had need have a present wit: and if he read little, he had need have much cunning, to seem to know that he doth not. Histories make men wise; poets witty; the mathematics subtle; natural philosophy deep; moral grave; logic and rhetoric able to contend. Abeunt studia in mores [Studies pass into and influence manners]. Nay, there is no stond or impediment in the wit but may be wrought out by fit studies; like as diseases of the body may have appropriate exercises. Bowling is good for the stone and reins; shooting for the lungs and breast; gentle walking for the stomach; riding for the head; and the like. So if a man’s wit be wandering, let him study the mathematics; for in demonstrations, if his wit be called away never so little, he must begin again. If his wit be not apt to distinguish or find differences, let him study the Schoolmen; for they are cymini sectores [splitters of hairs]. If he be not apt to beat over matters, and to call up one thing to prove and illustrate another, let him study the lawyers’ cases. So every defect of the mind may have a special receipt.

" A Dissertation Upon Roast Pig"

A Dissertation Upon Roast Pig by Charles Lamb
Lamb (1775-1834) was an English essayist. Reprinted here is the first part of his essay, the part which tells the story of the discovery of roast pork.
Mankind, says a Chinese manuscript, which my friend M. was obliging enough to read and explain to me, for the first seventy thousand ages ate their meat raw, clawing or biting it from the living animal, just as they do in Abyssinia to this day. This period is not obscurely hinted at by their great Confucius in the second chapter of his Mundane Mutations, where he designates a kind of golden age by the term Cho-fang, literally the Cook's holiday. The manuscript goes on to say, that the art of roasting, or rather broiling (which I take to be the elder brother) was accidentally discovered in the manner following.

The swine-herd, Ho-ti, having gone out into the woods one morning, as his manner was, to collect mast for his hogs, left his cottage in the care of his eldest son Bo-bo, a great lubberly boy, who being fond of playing with fire, as younkers of his age commonly are, let some sparks escape into a bundle of straw, which kindling quickly, spread the conflagration over every part of their poor mansion, till it was reduced to ashes. Together with the cottage (a sorry antediluvian makeshift of a building, you may think it), what was of much more importance, a fine litter of new-farrowed pigs, no less than nine in number, perished. China pigs have been esteemed a luxury all over the East from the remotest periods that we read of. Bo-bo was in utmost consternation, as you may think, not so much for the sake of the tenement, which his father and he could easily build up again with a few dry branches, and the labour of an hour or two, at any time, as for the loss of the pigs. While he was thinking what he should say to his father, and wringing his hands over the smoking remnants of one of those untimely sufferers, an odour assailed his nostrils, unlike any scent which he had before experienced. What could it proceed from?--not from the burnt cottage--he had smelt that smell before--indeed this was by no means the first accident of the kind which had occurred through the negligence of this unlucky young fire-brand. Much less did it resemble that of any known herb, weed, or flower. A premonitory moistening at the same time overflowed his nether lip. He knew not what to think. He next stooped down to feel the pig, if there were any signs of life in it. He burnt his fingers, and to cool them he applied them in his booby fashion to his mouth. Some of the crumbs of the scorched skin had come away with his fingers, and for the first time in his life (in the world's life indeed, for before him no man had known it) he tasted--crackling! Again he felt and fumbled at the pig. It did not burn him so much now, still he licked his fingers from a sort of habit. The truth at length broke into his slow understanding, that it was the pig that smelt so, and the pig that tasted so delicious; and, surrendering himself up to the new-born pleasure, he fell to tearing up whole handfuls of the scorched skin with the flesh next it, and was cramming it down his throat in his beastly fashion, when his sire entered amid the smoking rafters, armed with retributory cudgel, and finding how affairs stood, began to rain blows upon the young rogue's shoulders, as thick as hailstones, which Bo-bo heeded not any more than if they had been flies. The tickling pleasure, which he experienced in his lower regions, had rendered him quite callous to any inconveniences he might feel in those remote quarters. His father might lay on, but he could not beat him from his pig, till he had fairly made an end of it, when, becoming a little more sensible of his situation, something like the following dialogue ensued.
"You graceless whelp, what have you got there devouring? Is it not enough that you have burnt me down three houses with your dog's tricks, and be hanged to you, but you must be eating fire, and I know not what--what have you got there, I say?"
"O, father, the pig, the pig, do come and taste how nice the burnt pig eats."
The ears of Ho-ti tingled with horror. He cursed his son, and he cursed himself that ever he should beget a son that should eat burnt pig.
Bo-bo, whose scent was wonderfully sharpened since morning, soon raked out another pig, and fairly rending it asunder, thrust the lesser half by main force into the fists of Ho-ti, still shouting out "Eat, eat, eat the burnt pig, father, only taste--O Lord,"--with such-like barbarous ejaculations, cramming all the while as if he would choke.
Ho-ti trembled in every joint while he grasped the abominable thing, wavering whether he should not put his son to death for an unnatural young monster, when the crackling scorching his fingers, as it had done his son's, and applying the same remedy to them, he in his turn tasted some of its flavour, which, make what sour mouths he would for a pretence, proved not altogether displeasing to him. In conclusion (for the manuscript here is a little tedious) both father and son fairly sat down to the mess, and never left off till they had dispatched all that remained of the litter.
Bo-bo was strictly enjoined not to let the secret escape, for the neighbours would certainly have stoned them for a couple of abominable wretches, who could think of improving upon the good meat which God had sent them. Nevertheless, strange stories got about. It was observed that Ho-ti's cottage was burnt down now more frequently than ever. Nothing but fires from this time forward. Some would break out in broad day, other in the nighttime. As often as the sow farrowed, so sure was the house of Ho-ti to be in a blaze; and Ho-ti himself, which was the more remarkable, instead of chastising his son, seemed to grow more indulgent to him than ever. At length they were watched, the terrible mystery discovered, and father and son summoned to take their trial at Peking, than an inconsiderable assize town. Evidence was given, the obnoxious food itself produced in court, and verdict about to be pronounced, when the foreman of the jury begged that some of the burnt pig, of which culprits stood accused, might be handed into the box. He handled it, and they all handled it, and burning their fingers, as Bo-bo and his father had done before them, and nature prompting to each of them the same remedy, against the face of all the facts, and the clearest charge which judge had ever given,--to the surprise of the whole court, townsfolk, strangers, reporters, and all present--without leaving the box, or any manner of consultation whatever, they brought in a simultaneous verdict of Not Guilty.
The judge, who was a shrewd fellow, winked at the manifest iniquity of the decision; and, when the court was dismissed, went privily, and bought up all the pigs that could be had for love or money. In a few days his Lordships' town house was observed to be on fire. The thing took wing, and now there was nothing to be seen but fires in every direction. Fuel and pigs grew enormously dear all over the district. The insurance offices one and all shut up shop. People built slighter and slighter every day, until it was feared that the very science of architecture would in no long time be lost to the world. Thus this custom of firing houses continued, till in process of time, says my manuscript, a sage arose, like our Locke, who made a discovery, that the flesh of swine, or indeed of any other animal, might be cooked (burnt, as they called it) without the necessity of consuming a whole house to dress it. Then first began the rude form of a gridiron. Roasting by the string, or spit, came in a century or two later, I forget in whose dynasty. By such slow degrees, concludes the manuscript, do the most useful, and seemingly the most obvious arts, make their way among mankind.--

    ESSAY AND ESSAY WRITING

    ESSAY

An essay is a short piece of writing which is often written from an author's personal point of view. Essays can consist of a number of elements, including literary criticism political manifestos, learned arguments, observations of daily
life, recollections, and reflections of the author.

The word essay derives from the French word "essai" which means  "to try" or "to attempt". In English "essay"  first meant "a trial" or "an attempt", and this is still an alternative meaning. The Frenchman Michel de Montaigne (1533–1592) was the first author to describe his work as essays; he used the term to characterize these as "attempts" to put his thoughts into writing, and his essays grew.  Inspired in particular by the works of Plutarch, a translation of whose Oeuvres Morales (Moral Works) into French had just been published by Jacques Amyot, Montaigne began to compose his essays in 1572; the first edition, entitled Essais, was published in two volumes in 1580. For the rest of his life he continued revising previously published essays and composing new ones.Francis Bacon's "Essais", published in book form in 1597-1612 and 1625, were the first works in English that described themselves as essays.Ben Jonson first used the word essayist in English in 1609.
    PARTS OF AN ESSAY:

    A) INTRODUCTION/BEGINNING
    B) BODY
    C) ENDING/CONCLUSION
